History of the British Open and Past Winners

When it comes to betting on The British Open it’s often good to look back and see what kind of players have won in the past.

The British Open Championship is the oldest of the four major championships on the golfing calendar, and was established in England in 1860. The Open isn’t always played on the same course however, and is currently alternated between nine different venues throughout England and Scotland. One of the most famous courses to feature as a British Open host course is the Old Course at St. Andrews. This is widely recognised all over the world as the ‘home of golf’. For this reason, the British Open is held at St. Andrews every fifth year rather than taking a turn in the usual rotation.

The current champion is Englishman Darren Clarke, who won the title in 2011 at Royal St. George’s. He picked up a first prize of £900,000 for his winning score of 5 under par over the entire 72 holes. Previous golfers who have been particularly successful at the British Open include Tom Watson, who won the title five times and Nick Faldo who has won the championship three times. Tiger Woods has also won three times, and more recently, Padraig Harrington who successfully defended his title in 2008.

The first ever winner of the British Open was Willie Park Snr. He won the championship four times in the late nineteenth century, picking up a winner’s purse of £6 each time.

Upcoming Dates for the British Open

The next British Open championship is due to be held in 2012 at Royal Lytham & St Anne’s Golf Club. The tournament will be held from the 19th July to the 22nd July and promises to feature an action-packed four days of professional golf.

As with most golf tournaments of this size, the first 36 holes will feature all players who have qualified or been invited to play, and following this some will be eliminated for the final two rounds.

If you’re a keen golfer or enjoy a flutter on any sports event, then the British Open will be one to watch. Check out our best British Open betting site at the top of the page for great odds and a free bet on the tournament.
